Laguna Beach

Road to Laguna Beach
Day 27 – Sunday

Picked up black convertible mustang and headed up the Californian Coast – destination Laguna Beach.
Stopped off for lunch at Oceanside Harbour Village – quaint, busy little harbour.
Our new wheels

Enjoying the sunshine in the Harbour
Drove up Highway 1, which is the coast road and passed heaps of lovely spots along the way.
Arrived at accommodation – Travelodge across the road from Treasure Island Beach, one of the many small beaches that dot this coastline. You look one way and you have the ocean you turn around and you are looking at the mountains, very different to our coastal destinations at home. Downtown Laguna Beach is a free trolley tram ride about 1k down the road. They do it well here in California – there is free transport up and down this stretch of coast from May to September as parking is limited and to limit congestion downtown. The trolley comes approx every 15 minutes from 9am – 11pm.

Day 28 – Monday
Started the day with a walk along the coast. At times you have to walk on the side of the main road as all the mansions are built right on the beach and on the sides of the cliff faces. The homes here are expensive and some enormous. Walked all the way up to Thousand Steps Beach, a favourite of the locals and as the name suggests there are a thousand steps to the beach – well almost but when you walk down the only way out is back up. The homes on this beach have small beach huts on the sand and inclinators up to their homes at the top of the cliff.
The homes on Thousand Steps Beach - I could happily live in one of these beach huts

The steps- they were tough
Had to catch trolley back – exhausting walk.
Spent the rest of the day at the beach across the road. Water very cold, I love it that way but took a bit to get Mez into it.
Just had to let you know how touristy we have become. Chairs and beach bags from the local supermarket in bright colours.

Mez enjoying a day at the beach
Caught trolley downtown to see the sites and luckily it was a clear afternoon and experienced an Orange County sunset.
Sunset at Main Beach Laguna

Only in America - Not unusual to see a pampered pooch in Orange County

Day 29 – Tuesday
Another beautiful day so we headed to the beach but before venturing out blockout was applied to the whole body, as the sun was stronger than anticipated yesterday. The beach was a lot rougher today and the swimming venture was brief. I didn’t think I would be sitting on a beach covered in a towel to avoid the sun but that was me today.
After a while we left to get our yummy lunch organised. Yesterday we bought all sorts of naughty delights such as cheese, salami, cherry tomatoes, baby baby carrots (wish we had these at home) and some fruit. Packed ourselves a picnic and headed back to the park above the beach- just the most perfect spot.
Doing it tough in the sunshine

Our beach spot each day across the road - view from lunch spot
The surf was picking up and had a good time watching the swimmers below get pounded by the waves – lots of very inexperienced holidaymakers braving the surf. I must admit we did have a giggle at an Asian family get soaked by a whopper. It looked like it was their first time at a beach – very funny.
One of the many waves that came crashing down on the inexperienced

On way back we asked a guy to take a picture of us - well he thought he was a pro asking us to stand in a particular way, look a particular way. I have about 10 pics of us at this spot he just kept clicking - very funny.
Back to hotel to get organised for next trip tomorrow up to Venice Beach near Santa Monica.

San Diego

Day 23 – Wednesday continued
We did finally arrive at San Diego Airport but no luggage. Luckily there was one person there to help although if he was in our situation he would hope that the person helping him was a little less abrupt - not a good start to San Diego.
He took our details and we became a little worried when he asked for our Sydney addresses.
Luggage arrived at 2am thank heavens.
Hotel in a good position a few blocks walk from the district of Little Italy
Little Italy by night
and the trolley, the transport system that made life easy to access all attractions around San Diego.

Day 24 – Thursday
Caught the trolley to Gaslamp District, a trendy area with lots of restaurants etc. had a quick look around, very quiet in the day, area much better at night.
From there decided to catch ferry across to Coronardo Island just a short ride from the Convention Area of San Diego.
Asked a very helpful local what to do and he suggested take the bus to the other side of the island and see one of the ten best beaches in America and a famous and grand hotel called Hotel del Coronardo.
A corona at the bar overlooking the beach - very hot day

Grand hotel on the island
Hot sunny day at the beach so we had to have a beer at the Babock and Story Bar right on the beach. If this is one of the best 10 beaches in America I think they need to come Downunder and check ours out to see what a top 10 beach should look like but lovely area all the same.
Quick look around hotel and area then back to Little Italy for some dinner at authentic Italian at the back of a deli.

Day 25 – Friday
Another trip on the trolley – good and cheap form of transport as you buy a pass for as many days as needed. We purchased a 3-day pass for $12 which gives you unlimited travel on the trolleys and buses that connect at certain stations.
A trolley to Old Town Station and then a number 7 bus took us to SeaWorld. You guessed it we did the tourist SeaWorld day and it was really a lot of fun.
A map details all attractions and the times of all the shows. First stop was the Dolphins at Blue Horizons.
A trainer shaking hands/flipper to one of the dolphins

We took so many pics of these beautiful creatures

Hi there!- this was right in front of us
In some of the shows there is what they call the soak zone- it is normally the first 12 to 20 rows in the mini stadiums and it is where you have a more than 50% chance of getting wet. And of course we had to sit in that spot but luckily I still had the red plastic poncho that was given to us in New Orleans when on the bus tour in the rain. It was great to keep cameras dry and we only got a little wet – lucky as the guy next to us was soaked just like the sign indicated.
This is why they call it the soak zone - they train the dolphins to use their tails to splash the crowd.
The dolphins and trainers were fantastic, quite unbelievable in fact. There were dolphins, pilot whales, aerialists and a variety of birds. I don’t think we have anything like this polished performance at home.
Waving goodbye
The red poncho that saved us from walking around soaked all day.
Lots of things to see – smelly penguins, sharks, beautiful graceful turtles, pink flamingos, sea lions, seals and much more- all animals very well cared for in very suitable environments.
Giant turtles above and pink flamingos below. Behind the flamingos is a small section of the Mantra Ride.

Another fantastic show was the One Ocean Shamu Show – the killer whales. And of course we had to sit in the soak zone again – much more fun as you watch the whales come towards you and you’re thinking how wet will we be soon. What these whales did was amazing.
Shamu and partner

The whales delivered a bigger splash
Above and below some more tricks. Again so many pics were taken.

We visited the Wild Arctic with the polar bears, giant walruses and arctic seals. They even had a Cirque du Soleil performance entitled Cirque de la Mer.
There were a few rides that had to be ridden such as The Manta – a giant roller coaster and The Journey to Atlantis – another roller coaster type ride with a twist it has water involved thus the name – Atlantis. While waiting I said to Mez the one thing we don’t want is to be seated in the front as those people are getting off the ride soaked and of course you guessed it that’s where we were and yes we were soaked.
Mez soaked at end of Atlantis ride - if you look closely in the background you can see people coming down the first section of the ride.
Great day but it wasn’t over yet.
On the way back in the bus the driver asked us where we were from – I think we have tattoos on our foreheads that says foreigner or it could be the attire(tourist sandals) or the accent. Well he proceeded to tell us all the places to go and see and not to go back to hotel before visiting Old Town.
Old Town is a functioning replica of days gone by with old time stores and very authentic restaurants. We had dinner at a Mexican Restaurant with the musicians and the women making hand made tortillas in the front.
A 12 hour day – exhausting.

Day 26 – Saturday
Set out to be cultured and spend the day in Balboa Park. Massive area in the city that is home to museums, exhibitions, lots of Hispanic Architecture, the oldest and biggest outdoor organ in the world and lots of parkland. Not what you would expect when the term park comes to mind. Caught the tram like bus around as the park covers an area of 5 square kilometres. You could spend a day here but I think we were plum tuckered out from yesterdays adventure and not really in the mood for too much culture.
On the tourist guy’s recommendation headed to another district called Hillcrest – loads of good restaurants and very different bars. Spent the afternoon people watching and just relaxing.
So much to do in San Diego you need more time.

Las Vegas

Day 21 – Sunday
Early morning start at 4.45am to catch the flights to Las Vegas. Bit of a hiccup at the airport where both of our suitcases were overweight by a few kilos. They are cheaper internal airlines where you pay a standard $25 for one case. I personally think their scales are out as we did weigh them before we left hotel and we were under the 23k limit. Anyway there we were, doing what you see a lot of people doing, with suitcases sprawled on the floor of the airport with all the world to see undies, bras etc on full show. So in the end we paid for one overweight case a cost of $90 - all those pressies were too heavy!!!
We flew into Salt Lake City first.
We were lucky to sit next to a local on the flight and he was explaining the topography of the landscape and all about the massive salt lake we were flying over. Seawater contains normally 3.5% salt, the lake contains between 4 and 8 times that of the ocean. You can take your book and read it floating in the water with no effort at all, even all you skinny folk.
Connecting flight to Las Vegas on time and we arrived at another city on this planet that does not sleep.
You should see this fabulous hotel we have booked. It is the Trump Tower and it faces down 'The Strip' - Las Vegas Boulevard. It has 2 bathrooms, one of them bigger than my kitchen and dining area put together, a dining area, kitchen and lounge. We are on the 48th floor anything lower and you wouldn't see over all the other massive hotels.
Totally Gold just to reflect the Trump fortunes

Look closely at mirror there is a TV, every bathroom needs a TV?

Lounge, dining - you could live comfortably in this suite, just like a one bedroom apartment

Spa bath with a view of The Strip- it was big enough to hold a party in.
Settled in and got ready for our first night on the town which was the Rod Stewart Concert at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace. Caesars Palace is amazing it is enormous and Rod Stewart was wonderful, he is the ultimate entertainer. The stage was so big, twice if not three times anything in Sydney.
We even dug deep into the suitcases for the one going-out number.

Day 22 – Monday
Woke early to be shuttled to the airport as we were taking a helicopter flight to tour the Grand Canyon. I must admit I was feeling very apprehensive as this was the first but not the last ride in a helicopter. We were booked on Maverick Tours, the only company that has permission to land in the canyon.
Maverick Tours - where we landed in the Canyon
The journey started with a general introduction to the equipment and there were 6 of us altogether and as the other 4 were a family they were asked to sit in the back and Mez and I were in the front, which felt like there was nothing between us and the ground – very scary but the best seats in the place.
Hovering just off the ground gave you the feeling of weightlessness very unusual. Our pilot was a Tom Cruise, in Top Gun, lookalike – very cute. The flight to the Canyon took in the most amazing sites such as Lake Mead (USA’s largest manmade lake), Hoover Dam, an extinct volcano, Temple Rock and Iceberg Canyon.
Lake Mead from my view in the helicopter of Lake Mead- awesome

Hoover Dam - the white rock near the water line shows how low the water level is and there is real concern in Vegas as the level is dropping every year.

View of the Colorado River from just above the top of the Canyon

Manmade sink hole
We flew through the Grand Canyon along the Colorado River(recent evidence suggests that the river established its course 17 million years ago and has been working its erosive magic ever since) and landed 3,500 feet below the rim on Hualapai Indian Territory.
View of the Colorado River just before landing in the Canyon - as with a lot of rivers in America the water is brown from heavy silt concentration.

We all had to wear headphones and we communicated to each other through microphones - very cool
We had about 30 minutes to wonder around and Maverick Tours supply refreshments – so we had to have a glass of champagne.
Mez standing at the edge about 90m above the River in the Canyon. Some of the dessert plants were beautiful - took so many pics

What everyone does- drink champagne while standing in the middle of the Grand Canyon. What an experience.

An added bonus- a rattle snake if you look closely you can see she has one eye on you.
On the way back we had another set down in the desert to refuel for the trip back.
At the refuel stop- the orange satchel on my hip is a life vest that we had to wear in an arid landscape very unusual

You always hear and see pictures about how magnificent the Seven Natural Wonders of the World are but until you see this member and are immersed in it you really can’t grasp how majestic it really is. This was the most amazing experience and it is a must do if you ever visit Vegas. You can drive but when you get there you can only see one small section of the Canyon and it is a 9 hour round trip. Save your pennies and don’t even contemplate any option but the helicopter.
Colin our top gun pilot and the proximity of my seat to the controls

Our seats - Mez had a special job - if anything went wrong she was to hit the red switch you can see on the door so it would fly off. This info didn't do much for calming the nerves at the beginning of the flight but by the end we just wanted to do it again.

View of the Trump Tower with The Strip behind as we flew back in across Vegas
Later that night we decided to walk some of the strip with the other hundreds of thousands of tourists. Each of the Casinos have their own over the top attraction to be amazed by e.g. Caesars – has many of the well known attractions of Rome in larger than life sculpture, The Mirage – has an erupting, tribal volcano, The Bellagio Dancing Fountains synchronised to music in an 8 acre lake with the water shooting into the sky higher than a 24 story building and of course the pirates battle at Treasure Island.

Eifel Tower replica

Bellagio Water show

The Flamingo above and Bellagio below

A massive day one I’m sure we will not forget.

Day 22 – Tuesday
Had a bit of RNR this morning. Did a bit of retail therapy but alas not much as keeping below the required 23k weight is a problem. Across the road from Trump Tower is another BIG mall called Fashion Show Mall housing thousands of upmarket shops with upmarket prices but we were lucky to get a few things on sale such as 2 watches each - a bit extravagant
Later went to another show that we had booked from home called The Legends at the Flamingo. Unfortunately is was very amateur production and was a waste. In hindsight we would have been better to book at the discount ticket outlets where you can purchase show tickets once you get some local advise as to what is good to see.
On advise we then ventured down to Fremont Street – the Old Las Vegas. It was less crowded and had better restaurants.
Vegas by night from hotel room

Day 23 - Wednesday
Up early to pack. After much toing and froing, packing and unpacking, weighing and rearranging we made the weigh in at the airport but am carrying about 20k in my backpack and handbag. Flight to LA was rather turbulent and we were glad to touch down. Unfortunately the flight to San Diego has been delayed 3 hours so we have a 4hr transit here but there is always a positive to a situation and I was lucky to have time to finish the blog and get up to date.
Just found out the flight was cancelled but we were lucky to get on another flight later still.
Just found out that the new flight which was to leave at 6.30pm hasn't left San Diego yet so we will be here for another 2 hrs.

San Diego here we come. Eventually.
